Claret Bumble |
-

Hackle: Black and Claret Cock Hackles Palmered together. Alternatively a grizzle dyed claret looks well. My own preference is for a light shade of claret, almost maroon. This gives a nice contrast to the hackles on the worked fly.
-
Head Hackle:Blue Jay, tied as a collar.
-
Along with the Golden Olive Bumble, this fly must rank about the most popular lough fly. Make sure you use plenty of length in the barb for the fly to look right.

Claret Dabbler |

There's a big argument over who invented this fly. I have never met Donal McLoon, the reported inventor. However, I do know Freddy Steel who claims the genesis of this fly. Freddy it should be noted uses the palest claret possible (actually near magenta) and maintains the fly is all the better for it.

This fly is originally a north country dressing and should be tied thin. The Irish lough version is tied with a carrot shape body for the full hook length. Compared to the original, this is a fat pig of a fly. It is used at sedge time.

A note on the hackle. I have seen the hackle listed as ginger elsewhere. I know Eddy Purcell and he once gave me feathers from the "magic" cape to copy. It is actually light red game dye golden olive to give a mousey dun effect.
